Don’t Disappoint Your Mom

In Ogilvy on Advertising, David Ogilvy famously wrote:

The consumer is not a moron, she is your wife.

When it comes to social media marketing, the “user” is not a moron, she’s your mom.

Your mom wants valuable content, not irrelevant advertisements and in-her-face pitches.

Don’t spam your mom.

    A good rule of thumb: if you’d be ashamed to show it to your mother, father, grandparent, sibling, or significant other, it’s probably not the best idea to post it 😉

    It’s taken me over 40 years to stop being paralyzed by what my mom will say
    when she reads my work…

    Reminds me of the Ogilvy quote that says something like “the customer is not an idiot, she is your wife..” The best writing tip I ever heard was a writing instructor that said to write as though we’re writing to someone we respect — you took the same advice and made it even more personal. : )

    Succinct but quite true.
    I also use the rule, “If this would embarrass you with your mom, cousins, aunts, don’t put it on the internet.”
