Great post. Nice balance and fun way of getting to solid ideas. I’m sorry but I can’t help but adding this by Odgen Nash.

I never saw a purple cow
I never hope to see one
But I can tell you anyhow
I’d rather see than be one.

Hi Tara, thanks for stopping by!

I like seeding, that's a nice concept. And even though you are introducing Riya directly to users without advertising intermediaries (which is one classic definition of direct marketing), you're right... the demographic targetting that is a big part of the industry is missing. Unless, of course, you're loosely targetting the type of people who read blogs and use social media applications. :)

I suppose "social media" and "social marketing" really are the replacement terminology for "direct marketing." I still keep trying to apply the tried and true rules of economics though, so we don't lose site of certain crucial fundamentals.

Excellent article Brian...and well put.

You nailed it when you said that people need to build something remarkable (that's Seth's purple cow) before the community. It's almost, but not quite simultaneous.

I don't know if I would call it direct marketing, though. It sounds 'targetted' and push-like...even without the history. I prefer to think of it as 'seeding'. ;)

Char, remember the remix "Blue Monday 88?" There was a very good reason why that was released, and thankfully it too was a big hit. I wouldn't feel too bad for New Order.

Liz, there's nothing like a combination of Purple Cow jokes and Purple Cow poetry.

Especially on a Monday morning. :)

Oh, I'm sure money continues to be made of "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Or did you mean "Blue Monday?"

I love the post.

And Kurt Cobain was right. Love Will Tear Us Apart is a great record.

I think they made money off the record, though.
