The Thesis Theme Affiliate Program
Gets Serious

by Brian Clark

Missy Ward

In the short time the Thesis affiliate program has been around, we’ve paid out close to $100,000 in commissions to our affiliates. But in 2009, that number is going to get bigger… a lot bigger.

To make that happen, we’ve brought Missy Ward on board as our new affiliate manager. Missy is the co-founder of the industry-standard Affiliate Summit conference and an icon in affiliate marketing circles.

To say we’ve landed the Queen of Affiliate Marketing as the Thesis affiliate program manager is pretty spot on. And as cool as that is, it’s not even the coolest part.

The really cool part is Missy is donating all her compensation from managing the program to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. A long time proponent of the battle against breast cancer, Missy continues to fight the good fight through her efforts with the hot-selling Thesis Theme for WordPress.

Missy is coming out of affiliate management retirement for a great cause. The Thesis affiliate program beat out 50 other worthy merchants, so we’re definitely lucky to have her.

The fact that Thesis powers her own site probably helped. :)

We’ve got a lot of amazing marketing materials coming to help make our affiliates succeed at even higher levels. Snazzy videos, screencast demos, viral reports, and scores of new quality products… all coming soon.

But here’s what we’ve got for you right now:

  • 33% commission on all sales.
  • 60-day return cookie.
  • Creative banners, emails, and text links that are optimized to convert.
  • Knowledgeable and responsive affiliate management team accessible by phone, email, IM, and Twitter.
  • Rapid monthly payments + performance incentives.

Plus, earn a free pass to Affiliate Summit 2009 East this August in NYC!

Thesis

  • Make 3 sales, get a Gold Pass.
  • Make 10 sales, get a Platinum Pass.

Find out more about the Thesis affiliate program here, and let us start sharing the wealth with you and an excellent worthy cause. And remember, the best way to effectively promote Thesis is by understanding first hand how much easier it can make your own web-publishing efforts.

You’ve definitely got an appealing affiliate program. Pity the audience I’d be promoting to is so small. And I’m officially jealous that you made enough to pay $100,000 in commissions. :-)

Holy cow, 100K? That’s a lot of copies!

3 Glen Allsopp March 2, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Congrats guys, $100k is insane. Great to see the proceeds going to Charity as well on the part of Missy!

Good luck with it all

4 MondoNucleosis March 2, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Way to go, guys! And as if the commission weren’t incentive enough, you’re giving away Affiliate Summit passes too?! I literally just purchased the Thesis theme a few days ago and am loving it. Looks like I found my #1 affiliate product for the year.

5 The Mules March 2, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Congratulations, Missy Ward is a tremendous business asset and a wonderful human being. The mules are very excited. Time to go roll in a lush pasture somewhere!

It’s really heart-warming to see that, even in today’s difficult economic times, charity still has a place in this business. Although I have a reputation for being somewhat of a Gordon Gekko junior, I can nevertheless appreciate other businesses seeking to do good and spread benefits to the community they operate in (which, in case of Internet Marketing, would be the whole world, I suppose).

Good luck with driving affiliate sales – as previous posters correctly pointed out, $100,000 is an impressive number in and of itself!

As if Thesis isn’t already great enough, add Missy into the mix and donations that go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and I’m all signed up and ready to roll. My readership is fairly small (compared to the big girls) but I hope I can do a small part in helping out. Thanks Brian!

Great news – the affiliate program has been great for us so far, so we’re definitely looking forward to seeing all the new resources around the corner.

Shame I’m back in NZ. With the success we’ve had affiliate marketing Thesis it seems to be you’re practically giving away passes to anyone who signs up as an affiliate at that rate!

9 Sparky March 2, 2009 at 7:23 pm

Great news!Although I didn’t get any of the 1st 100k I’ll keep the banners up and keep spreading the word!

I’ve just started taking a serious look at affiliate marketing as a viable source of income. It’s probably kismet or something that happened right around the time I got Thesis and a developer’s license. I never wanted to get behind a product I didn’t value, but that’s no problem with Thesis. Now your client license has me seriously digging in to learn all I can about customizing it . . . which really is easy and flexible.

Gosh, now I’m starting to sound like a commercial for Thesis! But really, congratulations.

I’m redesigning Remarkablogger on Thesis right now (ready soon!) and I’ve really enjoyed being a part of the Thesis affiliate program. It feels great to earn money recommending something you love.

12 Make Money March 2, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Yikes that is amazing, I might just have to promote this on my new blog! Congrats on the amazing sales.

13 Mike March 2, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Do you think Missy will give us that uber-cool Thesis banner she has under the header on her site?

14 Brian Clark March 2, 2009 at 9:31 pm

Mike, I think odds are good. :)

15 Steven-Sanders March 2, 2009 at 10:38 pm

This is a great wordpress theme and an even greater cause.

Missy is awesome to give all of the profit to charity!

Cool people and cool stuff. Will have to take a closer look at the affiliate program and I’m due for a theme upgrade.

That’s fantastic, Brian. Glad to read things are going great for the Thesis team.

18 Missy Ward March 3, 2009 at 8:16 am

Look at all these familiar faces! Thanks for the warm welcome.

I’m thrilled to be managing such a killer affiliate program for an awesome product and be able to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation at the same time.

We’ve got some great things in store that will really beef up the offering and make Thesis even easier to sell.

If there’s anything that I can do for you that will help you promote Thesis, definitely give me a shout out at missyward /at/ gmail/ dot/com.

I’m looking forward to working with you.

Wow! Must work harder & smart way

Thesis is so easily customizable and fun to use that I signed up as an affiliate the minute I first heard about the program.

Thesis Affiliate is so powerful because it practices what you preach on the CopyBlogger and Teaching Sells sites:

Don’t give all of your valuable content away for free.

Blogs are great for promotion and furthering social media, but when it comes down to brass tacks we all have to eat.

Thanks for empowering the blogging community!

With all due respect, I would like to see Chris Pearson focus more on a 3rd party developer network before he spends so much time on an Affiliate Network.

Let’s be completely honest. Thesis is a revolutionary Wordpress theme (i.e. framework). However, Thesis still needs a lot of work before it’s ready for the mass market.

The problem with focusing on an Affiliate Network now is that Missy Ward will be very successful in attracting “average” Wordpress bloggers to buy Thesis but then Chris will be stuck dealing with dozens, if not, hundreds of customers suffering from “buyer’s remorse.”

The mass market of Wordpress users want to customize the design of their blogs and with Thesis there is too steep of a CSS learning curve required. Trust me, I’m somewhere between a newbie and a web developer and I was frustrated with the lack of design options available.

As the previous discussion on Chris Brogan’s blog highlighted, Chris Pearson needs to cultivate 3rd party “skin” developers before going for marketshare.

This is an example of putting the cart before the horse. Let’s just hope that both have not left the barn.

22 Brian Clark March 3, 2009 at 10:06 am

Timothy, thanks for your feedback. And you’ve pretty much nailed the plan. Chris Pearson will be concentrating on code and skins, which is why we’re expanding the team and beefing up support.

You never know… we might actually know what we’re doing. We’ll see… :)

23 Rebecca March 3, 2009 at 12:57 pm

That’s great that proceeds go to charity.

I’ve been hoping and expecting to make affiliate marketing monies from my own blog and another blog that I write for. So far my total affiliate earnings are a BIG FAT ZERO! I have great content, but I’m not sure what the problem is. I’m doing the best I can as a writer, but I’m not an affiliate marketing guru.

24 Shane Arthur March 3, 2009 at 2:02 pm

Timothy,

Check the Thesis files more carefully. Chris has had a snippit of code in there for months that hinted to the future use of skins.

in functions.php file
// Define directory constants
define (’THESIS_SKINS’, TEMPLATEPATH . ‘/skins’);

Now say you’re sorry. Just messin’.

25 Matthew Dryden March 3, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Brilliant. I’ve seen Thesis used and employed in so many different ways – I love the support and the power behind it…but I still need to take the leap myself.

I will someday, I promise.

26 Dean Saliba March 3, 2009 at 4:28 pm

A very nice story. :)

Hopefully I will be able to use the Thesis program when I start getting into affiliate marketing.

27 REW Ryland March 3, 2009 at 7:29 pm

Classic.

Great to hear of the success to date and will continue to follow the developments.

28 lawton chiles March 3, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Brian, can you guys cover a “best practices” type of scenario for affiliates?

I know that Thesis is highly customizable, but the banner on your site for Thesis seems to be custom and on the right, while others are testing different layouts.

Just curious. Don’t want to slap it up just anywhere.

Best,

Lawton

100k! For a cause like the National Breast Cancer Foundation! That’s great Missy. They do great work. They just launched their online community too- http://www.nbcf.org . Wish you all the luck.
