Improved Thesis Theme for WordPress

by Brian Clark

Thesis WordPress Theme

Just a quick note to let you know that Chris Pearson and I (ok… Chris) has added significant new power and flexibility to the Thesis Theme for WordPress. There’s also a special offer that runs through the weekend (at least you can thank me for that).

Here’s what’s new with this latest update to Thesis (which should be live and available by the end of the day):

  • New “Design Options” panel allows you to customize fonts and font sizes all across the theme. Testing different typographical combinations has never been this easy on the Web, and this is a feature that should appeal to designers and non-designers alike because you can play around in a non-destructive, non-code environment. Best of all, no reinventing of the wheel is required—the resulting typography is expertly constructed no matter what font/size combination you choose.
  • The Layout constructor in the new “Design Options” panel allows you to select a 1, 2, or 3 column layout AND to specify the width of your content column. When used in conjunction with the font selector, the layout constructor yields a nearly endless set of design possibilities. Now, your Thesis doesn’t have to look like the next guy’s, and you don’t have to code anything to make it happen.
  • New title tag constructor allows for detailed title customization through the options panel.
  • Plus a bunch of tweaks and improvements based on suggestions from the Thesis community.

And believe it or not… there’s another Thesis upgrade coming next week. Color customization is on the way with multiple pre-defined theme color schemes plus a template for your own easy custom color scheming.

Of course, once you join the Thesis community, you get every upgrade at no extra charge, so no need to hold out for a better version. Check out the details here, but remember… Monday’s too late.

Thesis is the search engine optimized WordPress theme of choice for serious online publishers. If you’re a blogger who doesn’t understand a lot of PHP, Thesis will give you a ton of functionality without having to alter any code. For the advanced, Thesis has incredible customization possibilities via Thesis hooks.

With so many design options, you can use the template over and over and never have it look like the same site. The theme is robust and flexible enough not only to accommodate a site like Copyblogger, but also to enable the site to run far more efficiently than it ever has before.

I purchased the Thesis theme a few weeks ago after comparing it with the Revolution theme, and I’ve been really happy with it so far. The support is incredibly good, which in itself makes it worth it. I was REALLY happy to hear about Cosmo as well –

The theme is worth every cent IMHO. Thanks.

Looking forward to seeing the new magazine style. Very impressed with the typography and line spacing, the layout and the Options Panel. You have my vote.

Thesis is awesome, and a value. I courted three templates before falling in love with Thesis. It even got me to move to Wordpress, and out of my Mac insulated comfort zone. It’s a beautiful theme with a friendly environment. I would’ve paid twice as much and felt like I got a good deal (and I paid for groceries with wrinkled dollar bills and change a couple of weeks ago). The only thing I’ve ever wished for was some slight tweaks that were simple to pull off (such as custom color) without knowing how to code. Sounds like that’s now taken care of. A great theme just flew to perfect.

Thanks for the cool news. I like this theme.

Hi, I am a Thesis Evangelist. Seriously, Thesis is a great looking and highly customizable theme for Wordpress. These additional perks that Brian mentions are going to be fabulous. You’re stupid if you don’t buy Thesis… :)

I don’t mind having many different sites use the Thesis theme ya know why? because you can customize the theme in a way that allows you to retain your individuality. Not that I have really customized my theme all the way yet…don’t judge me because I have a lot of projects going on.

Is it drag and drop simple to use? No…you have to be willing to learn about Wordpress and for some customizations you need to learn a little bit about html. If you want a great professional theme Thesis is a GREAT option. I’ve never gotten comments about how easy it is to read my blog before…I’m getting them now.

Brian

If we get in on this great deal, when Cosmos is released can we use that theme on one site and still use Thesis on a different site under the one site license? Sorry for the somewhat dumb question but I just want to make sure. If so then this is a ridiculous deal, basically two professional themes for $43.50 each…

I absolutely love “A proposition that is maintained by argument.”

8 Brett Borders August 28, 2008 at 2:55 pm

I bought Thesis and it is quality gear, but I hope it doesn’t get “over played” and over promoted.

9 Chris Pearson August 28, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Brett, future releases of Thesis will enable people who have absolutely no HTML or CSS knowledge to customize their installations in completely unique ways. Also, in about a week, you’ll be able to do your own color customizations with ease, so that will be yet another thing you can leverage to make your site stand out from the crowd.

10 Brian Clark August 28, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Adam, you got it. :-)

11 netmeg August 28, 2008 at 3:30 pm

I bought a developer’s license when it first came out – I understand I get updates (thanks!) but will I also get the Cosmo theme if I want it, or is that a special offer for new sales?

12 Indie Music Blog August 28, 2008 at 3:37 pm

This theme was a godsend for me. I’m shocked to still find some comments about the price tag. I would have paid triple. So clean and easy to use and the user forum is worth the price of admission alone. I was out on a deserted island with my last theme. The community (and especially moderators) are responsive and helpful.

Over promote all you want. You guys deserve it. Brett – if you have issues with this theme being too widespread and unoriginal, start customizing. They’ve given you the tools.

I rarely give testimonials. Great work guys.

13 Roger Kondrat August 28, 2008 at 4:26 pm

@Pearson I am interested in making a buy but I can’t see how I can implement a 3rd party comment management system.

Is this something you are looking into? Will you make it easy to include 3rd party code?

If so and its in the NEAR future I am in as well but I use Disqus and Intense Debate and I don’t want to stop for a theme since my readers enjoy that feature.

14 andrew August 28, 2008 at 6:04 pm

I bought a Dev. License to Thesis already, how can I upgrade to so that I can take advantage of the features you spoke about in this post? Or is it not ready yet? (Or is it not “the end of the day” yet??)

15 Brian Clark August 28, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Andrew, you’ll get the full upgrade, just like anyone who has already bought Thesis. Chris is on West Coast time, so hang tight. :-)

16 andrew August 28, 2008 at 6:20 pm

I apologize. What’s that saying? You can’t rush genius…or fools rush in?

I guess ESPN isn’t the only one with an East Coast bias.

I’ll sit back and wait patiently with everyone else. Thanks Brian.

Looking forward to receiving those upgrades to the Thesis we have. Smart choices to add.

(You sippin’ margaritas yet, Chris?)

22 Simon August 30, 2008 at 11:21 am

I purchased the developer license of Thesis theme a week earlier. I love the theme so much. Looking forward to incorporate more flexibility blogger to customize the theme. Thanks for developing such a great theme, even though it’s not free!

23 BloggerDad August 30, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Awesome news. I can’t wait to tinker a bit more with my site’s design. Like many here, I tried out several (and by several, I mean at least 15) free wordpress themes before plunking down cash for Thesis. Given that I recently lost my job, I was hesitant to spend money on a theme, but it is without a doubt the best investment I’ve made for my website. Thesis is a great theme made with great care for the user! Thank you. I look forward to seeing what Cosmo has to offer.

24 Amy Derby August 31, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Another thesis fan here. Excellent template even for technologically challenged idiots like me. So you get nothing but praise from me!!

Looking forward to seeing the new updates and such. :-)

25 Half Man/Half Coach September 1, 2008 at 8:26 pm

I don’t care for this theme too much. It is okay for certain bloggers though.

26 Patrick K. O'Brien September 4, 2008 at 10:16 am

I’m very happy with Thesis, especially after this last upgrade. I added some screen shots of the new options pages to my website:

http://www.thesistheme.org/what-are-my-options/

Now it is so easy to change the font and column layouts, which seemed to be one of the common requests. I am still waiting in anticipation for an easier way to change the main logo graphic, but I’m sure that will come soon enough. Keep up the great work.

27 Jen Brister September 4, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Awesome! I can’t wait for the updates.

28 The Smarter Wallet September 7, 2008 at 1:31 pm

I’m really looking forward to the magazine style theme. Can’t wait to see just how awesome it is! :)

29 Adam Teece September 13, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I’m seriously thinking about using Thesis for a new podcast I will be launching soon. One thing stopping me though is I have some questions about it, but there is no place for me to ask. I left some comments on a post, as that seems to be the only place and haven’t gotten a response in over a week. It would be nice to have a section of the forums for non-users where they could ask questions before purchasing.

30 Patrick K. O'Brien September 15, 2008 at 8:51 am

@Adam – You’re right. There really isn’t an obvious way to get pre-sales questions answered. The forums would be one way to do that. I believe I’ve heard rumors that the forum software was going to change some time soon. If that’s true, then maybe another section could be added. In the mean time, I’d be happy to answer any of your questions to the extent that I could.

Pat

P.S. I see you are a Gary Vaynerchuk fan. I love that guy! I listen to him whenever I’m “working my face off” and need a little boost (or should I say a little more thunder).

31 Brian Clark September 15, 2008 at 8:58 am

Patrick, thanks for being a good community member. :)

I emailed Adam directly over the weekend to find out what he wanted to know, but I haven’t heard back yet.

32 Adam Teece September 15, 2008 at 9:08 am

@Patrick – I really appreciate the offer. Brian did e-mail me and I just got back to him. Was at a blogging conference all weekend. If Brian can’t help me out I will gladly ask you questions as well, there was just a couple things I wanted to know about some plugin compatibility. I need to figure out if this will serve the new podcast I am working on well and get approval from my partner.

@Brian – Thanks for the help. Sorry about the delay in response. Awesome job on your panel at IZEAFest.

Wow, Thesis keeps getting better! This latest release of the Thesis Theme is really exciting. I posted some details about it on my blog here:

Thesis Theme 1.2 Revealed

There are now so many options that I had to make that post the first of a series because I couldn’t cover them all in one sitting. :-)

34 Karl Kiss October 12, 2008 at 3:33 am

Thanks for the cool news. I like this theme.

35 Google Success February 4, 2009 at 8:36 am

This theme is excellent, very easy to use and customize and is all designed for ranking high in search engines. Thanks for the review.

36 Noah Robinson June 9, 2009 at 5:08 pm

The theme looks great.

Pardon my ignorance but is this theme only for installed, third-party hosted versions of Wordpress (wordpress.org)?

I’m currently working off the wordpress.com system and I’m thinking I may need to switch to .org.

Thanks :-)

37 Social Media Commando July 23, 2009 at 8:27 am

Disappointed…

Not a chance. The Thesis Theme works even better than advertised. It marries design and SEO/SEM functionality beautifully.

So beautifully, in fact, that I was inspired to create a Thesis Theme Search Marketing E-Course (FREE). The 8 week course teaches readers how to create a kick ass search campaign using Thesis (design, SEO, SEM …and more).

Did I mention it’s Free?

38 Farnoosh Brock August 1, 2009 at 11:10 am

Hi, I am going to switch over to Thesis most likely too. Reviews and testimonials on the theme are superlative. Is there no way I can “preview” my blog on a standard Thesis template though before the switcho-over, similar to how you can do it with the free themes in Wordpress?
Thank you!

39 John Flood August 24, 2009 at 4:58 am

Hi,

Does Thesis run on Mac or Windows? I have both. Can I download Thesis to run on both?

Does Pressrow, Copyblogger and other Pearson blog tools port to Thesis? If I use Pressrow, and I want to upgrade to Thesis, is there a painless way to move my Pressrow theme to Thesis theme?

Thanks,

John Flood

40 Farnoosh Brock September 25, 2009 at 5:34 am

Just to circle back from my comment months ago, Brian, I switched over to Thesis, and am amazed by the features, the aesthetics, and most of all the superb support team. Thank you for recommending! (On and the SEO School from Naomi is very good too).

41 ravi September 29, 2009 at 8:57 am

Thanks for the cool news. I like this theme.

42 Lauren October 15, 2009 at 11:28 am

I have just downloaded thesis and I am very excited to finally give it a try, but I am having difficulties opening up Thesis. I have a mac and once I downloaded it I can not open it up. I was just seeing if there are any other mac users who could offer me some advice on the situation.

43 Brian Clark October 15, 2009 at 11:34 am

Lauren, it shouldn’t be anything Mac specific. I would go back and download again, maybe something happened in the first download process.

If you continue having problems, go into the forums and ask for help. That’s what they’re there for. ;-)
