What’s the Big Deal About the Thesis Theme for WordPress Anyway?

by Brian Clark

Thesis Theme for WordPress

Why would search legend Danny Sullivan, Google’s Matt Cutts, and Microsoft search engineer Jeremiah Andrick all use Thesis for their sites?

Or what about search and affiliate marketing entrepreneur Rae Hoffman? Or SEO guru Michael Gray? Or Darren Rowse, Scott Beale, Chris Brogan, and LeVar Burton?

(That’s right… LeVar Burton from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Roots. Who needs Ashton Kutcher?)

More importantly, why would over 5,000 other bloggers and webmasters purchase the same WordPress theme? Seems a bit strange.

Well, it’s because Thesis isn’t really just a WordPress theme. It’s actually an SEO-optimized code framework with tons of design flexibility.

Despite the tremendous rate of adoption in the last year, we’ve never done a good job of explaining that before. Plus, a lot of the coolest features are brand new.

So I put together a video for you (with the help of my Teaching Sells partner, Tony Clark) that provides an overview of what sets Thesis apart from the pack. And Thesis creator Chris Pearson has done a set of in-depth demo videos that finally reveal what all the fuss is about.

Check out the videos here.

Thesis WordPress theme

Thesis is the search engine optimized WordPress theme of choice for serious online publishers. If you’re a blogger who doesn’t understand a lot of PHP, Thesis will give you a ton of functionality without having to alter any code. For the advanced, Thesis has incredible customization possibilities via Thesis hooks.

With so many design options, you can use the template over and over and never have it look like the same site. The theme is robust and flexible enough not only to accommodate a site like Copyblogger, but also to enable the site to run far more efficiently than it ever has before.

Thesis is wonderful, there’s no doubt about it. Worth every penny.

If you suck at design and code like me, the trick to Thesis customization is to hire some experts to pimp it for you. It took me awhile to find the right people (everyone else said it couldn’t be done), but now I’m stoked.

Thesis experts are few and far between, but I expect more enterprising people to step forward to the opportunity.

Dude, Tony makes you look good. :-)

I have several sites running on Thesis and each one is more beautiful than the last. Of course, it’s my partner that does all the work, but still they look outstanding. The cool thing is, the last few don’t even look like Thesis anymore, but they still have the off the open hook (ha ha Thesis humor) architecture underneath.

You “sound” as good as Tony made you look ;-)

I’m very pleased with Thesis for my site. Chris and everyone involved have done an amazing job creating a theme that looks great and is super easy to customize It’s also future-proof because of Chris’ focus paid to writing good code behind the scenes.

Is there any way to get a list of Plugins that care included with Thesis …. and the plugins that are compatable … This many be a huge list, so (as a complete newbie) is there any email to which I send the list of plugins I’m considering and get a reply whethere they have been tested wth Thesist. Thanks.

I just bought Thesis a couple of days ago and it is taking me a while to figure it out. It doesn’t operate like my previous theme does, so I haven’t been able to do all the custom CSS that I’m use to doing.

However, the forum is awesome. I post a question and it’s answered within the hour. I can see the massive potential of the theme, I just have to get my head around the basics.

I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Brian, hi,

I’ve been a user of Thesis since the beginning of the year and just upgraded to 1.5.

I wrote a review of 1.5 on my blog in which I described it as ‘more than a theme – a platform that enables you to maximise the power of WordPress without the need for coding’.

That, to me, is the big differentiator.

And BTW – after all the trials Chris and the team had with 1.5 the final result is staggeringly good :)

Cheers,

Martin.

Watching the video I was like, “Who made this video? It is really done well. Bravo.” Anyway, thank you for information.

Been using Thesis for a couple of weeks now and find it incredibly easy to use. I have very little coding knowledge but the forum is very helpful and supportive, and the ‘hooks’ feature means I can have a little play with the css without risking a meltdown. Although you have to pay – it’s definitely worth it!

I read an article by Lisa from Website Babble. She said it’s really easy to work with too.

15 Shaun May 6, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Brian,

You should get a newsletter to market stuff… I’d pay to read it just to learn from the copy. That’s one of the reasons I read Frank Kern’s newsletter.

been using thesis for quite some time, and enjoying it every moment :) good work guys.

I am currently using another Chris Pearson theme, which I love. But I read so much about Thesis, so purchased the Thesis theme yesterday. I can’t wait to see what changes are possible for my site.

18 Ari Herzog May 7, 2009 at 12:54 am

It’s always fascinating to me when some people are singled out more than others for using Thesis. I started using it last October, for instance.

Ravi, any plugin can be used with Thesis. But many plugins you don’t need with it, as each new version incorporates elements of other plugins. For instance, you don’t need the notorious All-in-One-SEO plugin with Thesis. Also, like any non-Thesis theme, you can get creative with the behind-the-scenes programming and create what you can otherwise do with a plugin.

19 Ajith May 7, 2009 at 12:56 am

There’s no doubt that thesis is much more than just a theme – it’s a classic software piece that’s componentized well. Chris is really a software developer than a theme designer I guess :)

While $87 for lifetime license is reasonable, the problem I am facing is that, I need to spend another $200 to get it to a branded skin. Just wondering if getting a premium skin custom made by somebody will be an alternative.

PS: I am in the process of changing my theme and thesis is definitely in my mind.

These videos (especially Chris’ tour) really helped me make the decision to purchase Thesis. I’ve been looking for a Wordpress theme for a few months now, and Thesis is the best one I’ve found. I love that it’s super customizable and I can use it on all of my Web sites.

21 J.D. Meier May 7, 2009 at 2:22 am

Thesis definitely codified a bunch of best practices from SEO to look and feel.

I always heard the CopyBlogger theme was the best ;)

22 Steen Öhman May 7, 2009 at 6:31 am

Sounds very nice – would like to change to Thesis also on some of the sites I run.

What about all the meta data from All-in-one-Seo plugin, can you transfer these data to Thesis?

23 jeremiah andrick May 7, 2009 at 10:04 am

Thanks guys for including me as a part of the Thesis community. I appreciate being mentioned with this great group of bloggers.

A few words about this video in the languages I (barely) know:

“Changa” (Punjabi)
“Bhot acha” (Urdu)
“Jaid jiddan” (Arabic)
“Hun How” (Mandarin)

Or “very niiice” (Borat)

I recently moved my blog into Thesis from another theme and am really pleased with the results. Thesis is an outstanding theme and an excellent piece of (evolving) work.

I did quite a bit of research prior to making the switch and Thesis won my vote based on quality of the theme (looks, performance, coding, seo), ease of use (the less coding by me the better), flexibility (hooks), available support community, and the strong potential for future growth, evolution and support of the theme.

The cost was a non-issue. If you are going to spend much time developing or working on your blog the monetary cost for Thesis is a no-brainer. The time you save and the enhnaced capabilties and flexibility you have with Thesis makes it well worth the investment.

Besides the DIYThemes support forums, one of the best sites I have found for top notch information and insights on Thesis is Marko Saric’s blog How To Make My Blog. Worth checking out, especially if you are relatively new to blogging.

Brian, great job on Thesis. I look forward to seeing it continue to evolve.

I’m going to buy thesis next month .. :D

27 Fabi May 8, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Thesis is excellent. Two months ago Matt Cheney and I started a business focusing on Thesis installs and customizations.

Why?

We were tired of customizing our friends’ Thesis blogs for free!

me using thesis for about half year now.
really love this theme.
and thesis seo framework really give me traffic and ranking in SE very fast than other my blog. :D

cheers to chris pearson…

Thesis is just wonderful.

Thesis has eliminated my need for various plugins due to the built in SEO features. I just had my site redesigned by a professional, however I am slowly learning to tweak things myself. It’s actually pretty simple once one gets the hang of it all.

Like someone else who has commented here, we’ve set up our Wordpress support business around Thesis – we like it that much. You don’t need All in One SEO Pack, nor Google Analytics for Wordpress. Plus it enables you to style your theme to look like almost anything.

Some non-video overviews would be great for those of us with the attention span of a five-year-old and who are short on time too. I think I want to purchase Thesis, so started watching a demo video, but was tapping my fingers after about fifteen seconds and stopped it not long after. I looked all over to find a little basic information on what I’d get out of the box, etc., but all I saw was videos…maybe I didn’t look hard enough?
